Statement of Purpose
...to
offer healthy alternatives to substance misuse by providing
comprehensive education, counseling and healthy life choices. We
endorse an abstinence model based on the principles of the 12-Step
Recovery Program.
Philosophy
Alcohol and/or drug addiction is
a primary, chronic and progressive disease. It is ultimately fatal if
left untreated. With appropriate treatment, progression may be
interrupted and ongoing recovery begun.
Alvis House endorses a holistic
approach by assessing specific life skills for treatment focus.
Individualized programs are developed to help maximize and promote
positive lifestyles.
Staff and
Accreditation
Alvis House is accredited by the
American Correctional Association and certified by the Ohio Department
of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) as an outpatient
treatment program.
Substance Abuse Services employs
counselors who are certified by the Ohio Credentialing Board. All
clinical practitioners are supervised by the agency's vice president
of clinical services, who is a licensed psychologist.
Substance Abuse
Treatment Programming
Individual Therapy
Living a life of
sobriety is not an easy task. One-on-one sessions provide an
environment for personal exploration and the development of a clearer
sense of self. Counselors teach clients how to take responsibility for
their actions and plan of recovery; building on the client's strengths
to develop problem solving and coping skills are key components of
this process. Specific obstacles preventing productive living are
discussed and linked to substance abuse.
Group Therapy
Group therapy
is provided in a supportive peer environment. This form of therapy
offers the client an arena for discussion of such topics as family
disfunction, 12-Step group principles, and those problems identified
in the client's treatment plan. After processing thinking patterns and
belief systems, the client is encouraged to test out new behaviors
with the goal of learning to experience the world from a sober
perspective. Receiving feedback and support from those "who have been
there" becomes a powerful therapeutic tool for both the individual and
the group as a whole.
Family Issues and Recovery
Alvis House
recognizes that family is very important to many of our clients. If
appropriate, and indicated on the client's assessment, family issues
will be incorporated in the treatment plan. Treatment plans will be
addressed in either individual or group sessions.
Education
For the clients in
the Substance Abuse Program who are not ready to admit substance use
is a personal problem, Alvis House provides a 12-week educational
series. Each session is approximately one hour in length and provides
basic information on a variety of topics related to substance abuse.
Presenting factual information regarding substance abuse helps the
client to become aware of his/her own defense mechanisms and enables
the client to develop a more realistic picture of the addiction and
his/her ability to change.
Relapse Prevention
Each client who goes
through Substance Abuse Counseling will be required to develop a
written Relapse Prevention Plan, which will be reviewed by the
counselor. The plan includes places, people and specific situations to
avoid. It stresses positive social outlets and agencies which are
supportive of a substance-free lifestyle. Thought patterns supporting
relapse are identified and healthy replacements established. |
